LAUREN GARBER is a reporter at KOLO 8 News Now in Reno, Nevada, where she covers local stories that impact the community.
She was one of the first reporters on the scene of the deadly IHOP shooting in Carson City, and obtained exclusive information on what could have caused the Amtrak crash in Northern Nevada.
As the morning reporter, she gets to have some fun, too! Lauren has drag raced, held a 9-foot-long albino burmese python, walked a tight-rope, and stomped grapes on live television!
Before coming to KOLO 8, Lauren was the weekend anchor and reporter at FOX 40 WICZ-TV in Binghamton, N.Y.. There, she delivered an exclusive, investigative report about missed inspections at local school cafeterias that put children at risk, and covered the Environmental Protection Agency’s hydraulic fracturing hearing – a story that got national attention.
Lauren also served as a Washington Correspondent for WSEE in Erie, Penn., and WENY in Elmira, N.Y., where she did extensive reporting on health care reform legislation, Afghanistan War strategy and national politics.
But Lauren’s coverage didn’t stop there. As a reporting intern for Cox Television’s Washington, D.C., Bureau, she enterprised and reported daily for Cox’s 10 stations around the country. She was the first on the scene to speak with Senators George Lemieux (R-FL) and Richard Burr (R-NC) about what they saw on their October trip to Afghanistan, in addition to filing dozens of reports and multimedia web stories for KTVU, WSB, WPXI, KIRO, WFTV, WHIO, WSOC, KFOX, WJAC and WTOV.
She also interned in WHDH-TV’s (NBC) Special Projects Division, writing and assisting in the production of numerous hard-hitting reports, including one that exposed the sale of toxic children’s toys nationwide.
She has previously worked as an intern for ABC National News’ Homeland Security and Justice Unit in Washington, D.C., and CNN in Los Angeles.
Lauren holds a master’s degree in broadcast journalism from Boston University, and a bachelor’s degree in political science from UCLA. She is originally from San Diego, California.
When she’s not at work, Lauren loves to travel. She has driven across America twice, and lived in San Diego, Los Angeles, Boston, Washington, D.C., Binghamton, N.Y., and now Reno. During college, she spent four months studying abroad in Barbados, where she went SCUBA diving and spelunking. She has also traveled to South America, where she backpacked more than 60 miles to Machu Picchu, and explored the Brazillian amazon.
